Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (NYSE:APC) has suspended its limited operations in Ivory Coast, citing the continuing violence and instability in the wake of disputed November elections, according to a filing Wednesday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
As rival factions supporting incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo and Allasane Outtara — the man outside observers agree was the clear victor in recent elections — continue to fight for control despite a U.N. peacekeeping presence, economic activity in the mineral-rich West African nation has ground to a halt.
Anadarko, which has dual headquarters in Houston and Dubai, said it was shutting down two blocks, which are part of a huge swathe of fields that total some 8 million acres off the West African coast, including Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
