Investing in Microsoft (MSFT) for the Long Term
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) recently announced a solid earnings report (see conference call transcript here) which caused the shares to trade up to about $29.46 on January 27. Since then, the shares have dropped to about $27. I think Microsoft shares are attractive to start accumulating now and on any additional declines. There is a lot to like about MSFT shares. Earnings estimates are about $2.55 for 2011 and $2.76 for 2012. This gives MSFT shares a pe ratio of only about 10 times earnings. Compared to other software and technology companies like Autodesk (ADKS), which sell for much higher pe ratios, this is an attractive valuation. You can read more about why I think certain tech companies like Autodesk are overvalued here.
Microsoft has a huge amount of cash on the balance sheet of about $40 billion. This balance sheet strength will allow them to pursue growth opportunities in the future with new products and possible acquisitions and it will allow them to reinvest in their current product line with updates and improvements. Autodesk's (NASDAQ:ADSK) Growth Driven by EMEA, Emerging Markets
In the short term it appears Autodesk's (NASDAQ:ADSK) growth should be driven by emerging markets and EMEA.
Barclays said, "With operating margins in the low twenties still far below peak of high twenties, we believe our and consensus estimates have significant headroom as the global cyclical recovery takes root. For FY12 and FY13, we forecast EPS of $1.60 and $1.90. Near term, we expect the strongest growth in EMEA and emerging markets, with the manufacturing sector outperforming architecture, engineering and construction. However, we believe industry drivers such as building information modeling (BIM) requirements are creating a natural upgrade cycle for 3D products such as Revit, providing a specific catalyst for Autodesk's AEC business."
Barclays maintains an "Overweight" rating on Autodesk, which last closed at $39.31, down $0.31, or 0.78 percent. Barclays has a price target of $41 on them.

Autodesk (NASDAQ:ADSK) Management Counting on Recovery...Bad Idea
Management at Autodesk (NASDAQ:ADSK) asserted they're counting on a sustainable recovery in light of improving product lines and geos, but it's doubtful if someone can even legitimately assert there has be even been a recovery.

Earnings per share and revenue estimates were changed for FY2011 to $1.30/$1,929M from $1.31/$1,928M and to $1.59/$2,126M from $1.53/$2,051M for FY2012. For FY2013 the estimates raised to $1.90/$2,348M from $1.80/$2,234M.
