Supervalu (SVU) Remains Out of Favor
Shares of Supervalu (NYSE:SVU), even though they have moved up a little over the last several days, have been under pressure for some time, now trading at less than half their 52-week high of $17.47.
There are some who are starting to look at Supervalu as a potential turnaround play, and that could be mostly on the share price rather than anything that has changed.
For example, the major negatives on SuperValu are its huge debt load and pressures on margins from higher costs. Consequently, margins and earnings are under pressure, as they are at other grocers.
One major problem for SuperValu is they simply don't have the scale of their competitors, as they're market cap is a relatively minuscule $1.84 billion as of Thursday's close.
Supervalu does offer a dividend for safety minded individuals who are looking for a fairly decent return on their money. The dividend at this time is 35 cents a share; a yield of 4.6 percent.
If you think the company will be able to hold and grow that dividend, it may be worth taking a closer look at.

Supervalu (SVU) Looks for Cost Savings in Bagging Strategy
In a move that could save millions of dollars a year, Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) said it is putting into effect a policy of bagging in a more efficient manner.
Baggers at the company have been asked to place more items in the bags when bagging, and items with handles could be left out of a bag altogether.
It is a simple and effective practice if employees buy into it, and cost nothing other than a simple change in practice.
Supervalue was trading at $8.42, down $0.03, or 0.36 percent, as of 12:33 PM EDT.

SuperValu (NYSE:SVU) Must Get More Aggressive Says Jefferies (NYSE:JEF)
SuperValu (NYSE:SVU) appears to have come at a crossroads where the management needs to get much more aggressive in their strategy before it's too late for them, according to Jefferies (NYSE:JEF).
With no apparent short-term catalysts for the company, Jefferies significantly lowered their 4Q11, full year 2011 and full year 2012 EPS estimates from $0.53, $1.58 and $1.75 to $0.36, $1.31 and $1.26.
Something new and creative will have to be done with existing stores, or they'll have to make an important acquisition to boost the company, added Jefferies.
Jefferies reiterates their "Hold" rating on SuperValue, which was trading at $7.56, down $0.15, or 1.95 percent, as of 1:43 PM EST. Jefferies lowered their price target on them from $12 to $8.

Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) Asks Suppliers to Help Provide Customers Value
Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) has a huge challenge in attempting to win back consumers to the store, and while laying out an ambitious plan to that effect, have asked suppliers to partake in helping them provide better value to their customers.
Barclays says, "SVU has ambitious plans to change its entire merchandising approach while also cutting operating costs significantly. It is asking its major suppliers for help in providing value to its customers, but we're not sure that SVU will get what it wants, and this could force more of the necessary investments in everyday price to come from SVU's profits. Even if it gets support, we expect the process of winning customers back to take a long time. We see little probably that the company will sell any major assets, nor do we think that would be good for investors since it would compound a serious expense de-leveraging problem. Yet cash flow remains solid, and the company continues to pay down debt.
"The company has a comprehensive plan to improve results, but we believe the next year or so will remain challenging, so we are lowering our 4Q11 EPS to $0.33 from $0.42, our FY11 EPS to $1.27 from $1.43, and our FY12 EPS to $1.13 from $1.50."
Barclays maintains an "Equalweight" rating on SuperValu Inc., which was trading at $7.66, gaining $0.07, or 0.92 percent, as of 3:08 PM ESt. Barclays lowered their price target on SuperValu from $11 to $8.

Safeway (NYSE:SWY), Kroger (NYSE:KR), Winn-Dixie (Nasdaq:WINN) Dragged Down by Supervalu's (NYSE:SVU) Performance
Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) had a disastrous third quarter, generating concerns the overall grocery sector could be under pressure, including Safeway (NYSE:SWY), Kroger (NYSE:KR) and Winn-Dixie (Nasdaq:WINN).
Consequently, the shares of Safeway, Kroger and Winn-Dixie are all down today in response to the pressure.
Grocers, including Supervalu, implemented a costly promotional strategy for the Christmas season to attract consumers to the stores.
With Supervalu failing to produce from their efforts, the question is how the other grocers, and ultimately, buy extension, other retailers fared as well.
Safeway was trading at $20.95, down $0.21, or 0.99 percent, as of 1:00 PM EST. Supervalu fell to $7.65, down 0.94, or 10.94 percent. Kroger was trading at $21.38, down $0.16, or 0.72 percent. Winn-Dixie was trading at $6.33, losing $0.08, or 1.25 percent.

Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) Miss Drags Down Grocery Sector
The shares of Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) plummeted today on their miss, dragging a number of other companies in the grocery sector down with them.
Supervalu has a loss of 95 cents a share for the third quarter, with adjusted earnings coming in at 24 cents a share, missing by far the 32 cents a share analysts were looking for.
Guidance was the game changer though, as Supervalu downwardly revised their number for 2011, now expecting a loss of $7.09 to $7.19 a share and adjusted earnings of $1.25 to $1.35 a share in 2011. Prior estimates were for a loss of $5.74 to $5.94 a share and adjusted earnings of $1.40 to $1.60 a share.
Analysts project earnings for 2011 for Supervalu of about $1.43 a share.
We've been talking about this at Everything Gold for some time, that we'll have to wait for earnings reports before celebrating the alleged boost in revenue for the third quarter for the retail sector as a whole, as the strategy by Supervalu to spend on promotions, in their case backfired, and left them where they're at. That may be the story of the grocery sector in general going forward, and possibly other retailers as well.
Supervalu was trading at $7.70, down $0.89, or 10.42 percent, as of 12:43 PM EST.
