Semi's Shaky as (TXN) (INTC) (SNDK) (QCOM) (CY) Earnings Season Approaches
With growing uncertainty surrounding the semiconductor industry after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Texas Instruments (TXN) will be the first to report first-quarter earnings Monday, with Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC) posting its quarterly results on Tuesday, followed by other chip companies reporting next week like Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM), SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ:SNDK) and Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:CY).
It appears guidance will be paramount to investor response, as the supply and demand picture could weigh heavily on the sector going forward.
The earnings report should be decent for most chip suppliers, as pricing for NAND and DRAM chips have been finding some strength. but there's no doubt the wafer supply chain is broken, and a new challenge are the power supply issues.
Consequently the current quarter looks very weak, and investors will look there rather than at last quarter's results.

iShares Silver Trust (SLV) Versus (PCLN), (SNDK), (NFLX), (AAPL) (CRM)
While tech stocks have been hot for the last couple of years, silver has also done well, although when measured by certain dates, especially starting in 2009, tech stocks like Priceline.com (NASDAQ:PCLN), SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK), Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM), Juniper (NASDAQ:JNPR), and Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) (in that order), have outperformed the top silver ETF, iShares Silver Trust (SLV).
That's interesting, but any of us can choose a certain date for any stock or sector and make a case for overperformance or underperformance, depending on what we're attempting to communicate or prove.
For example, when you fast forward to the latter part of 2010, say August, then SLV outperforms all the above-listed stocks with the exception of Priceline and Netflix, although they're even with Netflix during that time.
More than likely as we go forward, we'll find that silver will probably outperform all of the tech companies, even if they continue to do well, as it could very well be the investment of the next decade, according to a number of experts.
That doesn't necessarily mean that the outperformance will come via SLV, but it will come nonetheless.

Micron (MU), SanDisk (SNDK) Up on Chip Prices Rising
The possibility the price of chips could rise because of the interruptions coming from the major earthquake which measured 8.9 in magnitude, pushed up the share prices of Micron (NASDAQ:MU) and SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) on Friday, as uncertainty as to the depth of the damage and how long it would affect Toshiba is creating the upside.
Not only is there damage of chips in the factories themselves, but possibly more of an impact will be the time it could take to ship the chips to foreign markets.
"In addition to delivery interruptions that may arise from factory damage, shipments of product may be affected by disruptions in road, rail, sea, and air transportation within and from Japan," Toshiba said.
Pricing leverage and market share gains are two of the areas Micron and others may be able to exploit if this has a deeply detrimental impact, which history has shown can be the case in even small interruptions in the industry.
Micron closed Friday at $10.23, up $0.31, or 3.17 percent. SanDisk closed at $45.07, up $0.14, or 0.31 percent.

Risks to (MU), (ATML), (NVDA), (SNDK) Overblown Says Raymond James
With shares of Micron Technology (MU), Atmel (ATML), Nvidia (NVDA) and SanDisk (SNDK) getting punished because of perceived fears for companies offering tablets based on Google‘s (GOOG) Android software, Raymond James‘s chip analyst Hans Mosesmann said the risks aren't nearly as bad as they appear, and in some cases are relatively non-existent.
Mosesmann says, “the Android tablet theme has been a powerful negative force in the past couple of weeks mainly because there is no way to refute it until more original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) launch Android Honeycomb-based systems and until Apple actually introduces the iPad2.”
Mosesmann also sees little if any threat to Nvidia’s “Tegra 2″ microprocessor from any tablet shortfall, in light of the fact that “the bulk of forecasted demand is coming from smartphones,” not tablets. The same is true for Atmel’s touch controller chips.
Nor is there really much bad news for As for NAND flash chips from Micron and SanDisk, there really isn't much in the way of bad news there either. “On the contrary, it appears to us that the NAND dynamic seems to be shifting more to an undersupply of NAND on the potential strong success of iPad 2 in the second half of 2011,” said Mosesmann.
Atmel, Nvidia, Micron and SanDisk shares are down 17%, 14%, 9% and 5%, since Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced the iPad 2 on March 2nd.
Micron closed Thursday at $9.93, down $0.39, or 3.83 percent. Atmel closed at $11.86, falling $0.66, or 5.27 percent. Nvidia closed at $17.92, down $1.22, or 6.37 percent. SanDisk closed at $44.93, dropping $1.21, or 2.62 percent.

Micron (MU), SanDisk (SNDK) Recommended on DRAM, NAND Changes
Sterne Agee chip analyst Vijay Rakesh today maintained a "Buy" rating and a $17 price target on shares of Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU), and a "Buy" rating and a $65 price target on shares of SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK), saying that “structural changes” are coming to the DRAM chip market and the NAND flash chip market.
On the DRAM side, Micron’s Taiwanese competitors lack the proper immersion technology to shrink DRAM chips, they have “significantly higher cash and fully loaded costs,” and there simply are fewer viable DRAM suppliers, which is prompting PC OEMs to go easy on their pricing demands.
Rakesh’s point is that with so few DRAM makers in the business these days, PC OEMs are not going to try to drive a hard line on price, because they don’t want to drive anyone out of business, thus creating shortages and driving prices back up.
On the NAND flash side, it’s all about Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad 2, and competing tablets, which have “irreversibly” changed the NAND industry.
Rakesh said, "The tablet market is an entirely new market for NAND, and with the iPad 2, appears to have gotten a second coming, a resurrection of sorts. [T]here were doubts about what another iPad would do, [but] the launch of the iPad2 laid to rest doubts of it being another Blockbuster. The overarching view in Taiwan is that iPad2 is a runaway winner in 2011. While all competing tablets have been pricing at $700-900, the iPad2 pricing at $499 has been a stunner, leaving the competition with no answer. But we believe the view here is, it is short term, where the other PC- handset OEMs will figure out a Tablet Pricing+Android app strategy and come back into the market. Structurally the Tablet segment is here to stay and will only grow in strength."
Micron closed Tuesday at $10.89, down $0.14, or 1.27 percent. SanDisk closed at $46.91, up $0.03, or 0.06 percent.

SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) Should Beat Out Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Toshiba, Samsung in Tablet Opportunity
SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) is a global leader in the flash memory card market and competes with Hynix, Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Samsung, STMicroelectronics, Toshiba and IM Flash (a joint venture of Micron and Intel).
We recently updated our forecast for SanDisk based on its strong performance in Q4 10 and the positive outlook for flash storage in the future given the rising popularity of smartphones and other portable hand held devices that use flash storage.
We believe that the recent surge in popularity of tablet devices in particular and the use of solid state drives (or SSDs), which are based on NAND based flash memory, provides SanDisk with a tremendous opportunity going forward. Below we here try to gauge the impact of the rising tablet market and the upside potential to our $50.60 Trefis price estimate for SanDisk’s stock.
The Tablet Opportunity
The launch of Apple’s iPad (NASDAQ:AAPL) in 2010 and its huge impact so far have led to a scramble among technology giants to launch their own tablets to get a foothold in this market. The tablet market will likely change the way people use computers, and so major computer companies need to have some competing product or risk missing out on the huge growth in this segment.

NetApp (NTAP) Struggles After Weak Guidance
Shares of NetApp (NASDAQ:NTAP) were down over 10 percent in early trading, as the company guidance was below expectations.
Craig-Hallum Capital Group analyst Eric Martinuzzi said in a note to clients, “The company is going through a personnel and capital equipment investment phase that should be good for the long term, but will weigh on near-term earnings and free cash flow leverage. Long term holders should not read too much into our downgrade, but we see the shares pausing in the near term as NetApp’s human capital growth catches up to its product growth.”
Several other brokerages downgraded the stock after the guidance as well.
While the guidance weighed on some parts of the tech sector, companies like Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), SanDisk (SNDK), Intel (INTC) and AMD (AMD) were all doing well in the trading session.
NetApp was trading at $53.72, dropping $4.82, or 8.23 percent, as of 12:18 PM EST.

SanDisk (Nasdaq:SNDK) Gets Another Boost, This Time from Sterne Agee
SanDisk (Nasdaq:SNDK) has been getting a lot of positive attention from analysts lately, with the more recent being Sterne Agee, which boosted its rating on the stock today.
Sterne Agee analyst Vijay Rakesh noted the overall flash industry seems to be strengthening and within that, SanDisk is improving on its NAND flash memory chips, which they are moving toward 24 nanometer dimensions.
"We believe NAND fab capacity and supply will be key metrics to watch, especially as Micron ramps its Singapore fab in March 2010. But we believe both the Samsung Line16 and Toshiba Fab5 are coming on only in 2H11 and will be key supply channels to monitor. While SNDK has become more prudent in watching its supply, key will be how Samsung behaves with its fab coming on line. We believe Hynix still remains under pressure in bringing on NAND supply given a big debt load," said Rakesh.
The good news is demand will probably remain solid for NAND flash, based on the increasing exposure they're getting from the tablet and smartphone sector. Prices also appear to be holding stronger than expected, looking to remain level, rather than drop 5 percent, which Rakesh had believed they would earlier.
Even with the positive comments, Rakesh still likes Micron (NASDAQ:MU) and Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) over SanDisk at this time.
He boosted his estimates for SanDisk to $1.4 billion in revenue and $1.22 in EPS for Q2, from $1.3 billion and $1.03, and increased his full year estimate from $5.6 billion and $4.03 a share to $5.9 billion and $4.66 a share.
SanDisk was trading at $49.90, gaining $2.10, or 4.39 percent, as of 12:16 PM EST. Sterne has a price target of $65 on SanDisk.
