Risks to (MU), (ATML), (NVDA), (SNDK) Overblown Says Raymond James

With shares of Micron Technology (MU), Atmel (ATML), Nvidia (NVDA) and SanDisk (SNDK) getting punished because of perceived fears for companies offering tablets based on Google‘s (GOOG) Android software, Raymond James‘s chip analyst Hans Mosesmann said the risks aren't nearly as bad as they appear, and in some cases are relatively non-existent.

Mosesmann says, “the Android tablet theme has been a powerful negative force in the past couple of weeks mainly because there is no way to refute it until more original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) launch Android Honeycomb-based systems and until Apple actually introduces the iPad2.”

Mosesmann also sees little if any threat to Nvidia’s “Tegra 2″ microprocessor from any tablet shortfall, in light of the fact that “the bulk of forecasted demand is coming from smartphones,” not tablets. The same is true for Atmel’s touch controller chips.

Nor is there really much bad news for As for NAND flash chips from Micron and SanDisk, there really isn't much in the way of bad news there either. “On the contrary, it appears to us that the NAND dynamic seems to be shifting more to an undersupply of NAND on the potential strong success of iPad 2 in the second half of 2011,” said Mosesmann.

Atmel, Nvidia, Micron and SanDisk shares are down 17%, 14%, 9% and 5%, since Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced the iPad 2 on March 2nd.

Micron closed Thursday at $9.93, down $0.39, or 3.83 percent. Atmel closed at $11.86, falling $0.66, or 5.27 percent. Nvidia closed at $17.92, down $1.22, or 6.37 percent. SanDisk closed at $44.93, dropping $1.21, or 2.62 percent.

Intel (INTC) Continues to Miss the Mark in ARM, Other Areas

On Monday, Mark Moskowitz, JP Morgan IT (NYSE:JPM) hardware analyst, lowered his 2011 PC unit estimates from up 9.5% year to year to up 7.0% year to year due to several reasons.

He attributed the lower estimates to "stalling PC demand in China, weak global consumer PC demand, demand leakage to tablets, an expected deceleration in commercial PC growth, and the elongation of the useful lives of PCs.

"In addition, the top four PC OEMs (over 50% of total PC demand) have all recently missed and/or lowered guidance, while a few notebook ODMs recently lowered 1Q11 shipment estimates. As a result, we believe Intel is at risk of missing the midpoint of its 1Q11 revenue guidance."

The Atom was Intel's first misfire. I noted back in January 2009 that Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) lost as much a $1 billion is misjudging the success of the netbook and switching production from more lucrative notebook chips like the Penryn to make up for a shortfall in Atom chips.

Companies which are or have been ARM licensees include Alcatel (ALU), Atmel (ATML), Broadcom (BRCM), Cirrus Logic (CRUS), Digital Equipment Corporation, Freescale, Intel (through DEC), LG Group, Marvell Technology Group (MRVL), NEC, Nvidia (NVDA), NXP , Oki, Qualcomm (QCOM), Samsung, Sharp, ST Microelectronics (STM), Symbios Logic, Texas Instruments (TI), TSMC (TSMC), VLSI Technology (VSLI), Yamaha and ZiiLABS.

Is Atmel's (NASDAQ:ATML) Performance Sustainable?

Atmel (NASDAQ:ATML) caught Wall Street off guard with its latest quarterly performance, and the company soared 10 percent on handily beating expectations.

The company had adjusted earnings of $0.25 a share which easily beat analyst expectations of $0.17, and revenue of $458 million surpassed estimates of $436.1 million. Revenue guidance of $440 million to $463 million next quarter easily beat estimates of $420 million.

As to sustainability, is it in the cards for Atmel or was this an anomaly?

It appears Atmel is positioned to make this a long-term event for the company, based mostly on the increasing sales of touchscreens and microcontollers.

Wedbush analyst Betsy Van Hees said, "We expect continued design-win momentum and ramp of microcontroller products, particularly capacitive touch."

Since November Atmel has soared 65 percent after another strong quarter.

Atmel closed Wednesday at $16.10, gaining $1.44, or 9.82 percent. Van Hees raised her price target on Atmel from $18.50 to $20.

Atmel (NASDAQ:ATML) Positioned for Strong Long-Term Growth

With human interface technology expected to continue to be a growth segment, especially in tablets, UBS sees Atmel (NASDAQ:ATML) positioned to take advantage of that over the long term.

UBS says, "Based our 4-Jan sector note, 'Top 10 for ‘11 – Key Semi Sector Themes,' we cited human interface technology as an area that we expect should remain hot given its enabling capabilities to grow new markets, with tablets as the headliner. Post-CES, we follow up this call with our belief that not only is 2011 likely to show very strong growth for Atmel but also 2012. Thus, we raise our out-year estimates on our view 2010/11 represent the front end of longer-term growth. From these changes, we raise our price target to $16.50.

"We continue to expect 4Q10 sales/EPS of $435m/$0.16, in line with consensus, and 2011 sales/EPS estimates of $1,895m/$0.72. Reiterating our secular growth view for touch, we raise our F2012 sales/EPS estimates by 2%/3% to $2,180m/$0.90."

UBS maintains a "Buy" rating on Atmel (ATML), which closed Wednesday at $13.98, up $0.11, or 0.79 percent. UBS raised their price target on Atmel from $13.50 to $16.50.

Atmel (Nasdaq:ATML), Broadcom (Nasdaq:BRCM), Int'l Rectifier (NYSE:IRF), QUALCOMM (Nasdaq: QCOM), Maxim (Nasdaq:MXIM) Get Positive Sentiment from FBR

FBR had a number of positive takeaways from the CES, and among them was positive sentiment on Atmel (Nasdaq:ATML), Broadcom (Nasdaq:BRCM), Int'l Rectifier (NYSE:IRF), QUALCOMM (Nasdaq: QCOM) and Maxim (Nasdaq:MXIM), among many others.

They raised earnings per share and/or price targets on the companies named, and see some real competition coming agains Apple's (Nasdaq:AAPL) iPhone.

FBR said, "We attended our ninth consecutive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week to assess demand trends and the latest round of gadgets. Most prevalent this year were tablets and smartphones (and touchscreens), 'wireless everything,' connected TVs and other content delivery devices, and even electronicized automobiles. Clearly, tablets are the latest craze, with more than 150 different tablets in development around the world. Only a handful of these devices will be successful en masse, thus meaning the other 140 devices will be 'me-too' flops. We saw beautiful, state-of-the-art smartphones from LG, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Samsung, HTC, and others, with some of those devices finally sleek enough to provide real competition to the Apple iPhone. QUALCOMM, Broadcom, Atmel, Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA), and Maxim are five chip stocks with meaningful smartphone exposure. 'Wireless everything' continues to be thematic with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G LTE, NFC (near-field communications used for e-wallet and security functions), and even wireless USB proliferating throughout a host of brand-new devices that previously did not exist, a primary reason for better-than-typical electronics demand trends of late (a trend that could certainly continue in coming years). Content delivery devices and connected TVs are proliferating, and while connected TVs will take years to become mainstream, this trend is a natural extension of broadband connectivity. Regarding demand trends, we think semiconductor demand is more resilient and robust than expected, likely setting up another round of 'beat and raise' earnings reports from chip firms following a less-than-seasonal 2H10. We are raising EPS estimates and price targets on ATML, BRCM, and IRF, and are raising price targets on QCOM, NVDA, MXIM, ON Semi (Nasdaq: ONNN), Silicon Labs (Nasdaq: SLAB), and Atheros (Nasdaq: ATHR). Regarding chip stocks, while playing some defense could make sense following such a run higher since Labor Day, we do think a 'beat and raise' round of earnings results in late January, improving economic and manufacturing data, an inflow of cash from bonds to equities, and still reasonable chip firm valuations may mean that any profit-taking sell-off is short term in nature and a likely buying opportunity. We still expect the SOX to grind higher towards 475–500 by year-end 2011. Stocks to focus on for upside include BRCM, MRVL, MXIM, NSM, ONNN, FCS, and Int'l Rectifier (NYSE: IRF)."

Atmel was trading at $13.27, down $0.22, or 1.63 percent, as of 11:46 AM EST. Broadcom was at $45.23, up $0.34, or 0.76 percent. International Rectifier was up to $30.13, gaining $0.13, or 0.43 percent. QUALCOMM was at $51.99, up $0.26, or 0.50 percent. Maxim was at $24.33, up $0.34, or 1.42 percent.
