Amazon (AMZN) Targets Netflix (NFLX), Launches Streaming Video Service

Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) rolled out a streaming TV and movie service for its prime customers, taking a direct shot at fast growing rival Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX).

Amazon announced on Tuesday that its prime customers, who pay $79 a year for free two-day shipping, can choose among 5,000 TV shows and movies such as "Syriana," "Doctor Who: Season 4," and "Analyze This" to stream through computers and devices such as Roku. The streaming video service is available to prime members at no additional cost.

Netflix shares fell 4 percent in opening trade on Tuesday while shares of Amazon were down 1.5 percent.

A representative from Netflix was not immediately available for comment.

The move ramps up the battle among Netflix, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), which are all vying to control the living room by letting consumers watch TV shows and movies directly from the Internet to TV sets and other devices like tablet computers.

At the same time, these companies are trying to woo media conglomerates such as Time Warner Inc (NYSE:TWX), Walt Disney (DIS.N), News Corp (NYSE:NWS), Viacom (NYSE:VIA-b) and CBS (NYSE:CBS) for their TV shows and movies.

News Corp (NYSE:NWS) Acquiring Murdoch Daughter's Shine Company

Rupert Murdoch brings daughter Elisabeth back into News Corp. (NYSE:NWS) fold with Shine acquisition.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has reached a deal to buy Shine Group, the U.K.-based television production company founded by the business magnate's daughter Elisabeth, in a deal that values it at 415 million pounds ($673.3 million) including debt.

The all-cash transaction will bring Murdoch's eldest daughter, at age 42, back under the News Corp. umbrella 11 years after she left as former managing director of Sky Networks.

Her return comes amid speculation about who will succeed her 79-year-old father as head of the company. Elisabeth's brother James, 38, is considered to be the front runner to take over the media empire. He oversees a much larger portfolio, as chief executive of Europe and Asia.

Rupert Murdoch, News Corp (NYSE:NWS), and 'The Daily' on Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad

Most coverage of Rupert Murdoch's and News Corp.'s (NYSE:NWS) foray into a digital newspaper misses the point, as the current data on how many Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPads are available to offer the digital newspaper "The Daily" on aren't relevant in the short term.

Murdoch has a longer time-frame for his projects than most western businessmen, and so to take the existing numbers and project what it'll take for success or failure may be interesting, but also irrelevant.

One example used is the totality of mobile ad spending projected for 2011, which according to eMarketer is about $743 million, and for 2012 - $1 billion.

What's wrong with those numbers is it doesn't include a media outlet like "The Daily," whose very creation could change the ad picture, as it would centralize viewers in a way companies like and understand. At this time the ad spend is spread around an unkown and large number of mobile properties.

But even that's only a small part of the picture. As mentioned, Murdoch tends to have a longer outlook for his projects, and isn't stingy when launching a new one, such as Fox Business, where he gave it significant financial resources and time to ensure every possibility of success. The same should happen with "The Daily" as well.

This of course doesn't guarantee success, but it does help lower the percentages of failure.

To that end, Murdoch has an initial investment of $30 million to start things off for The Daily, and another $26 million annually to keep operations going. Somewhere around 100 employees were assigned to the project.

Estimates are it'll take about 650,000 subscribers for The Daily to break even, and probably a little more than that when taking into consideration Apple's take for selling it via its App Store.

With a long-term commitment, strong financial backing and the people to get the job done, that number isn't as daunting as it initially looks at first glance.

Media companies know to thrive in the future digital media will have to be a large part of the picture, and Rupert Murdoch and News Corp., among the major media companies, has been willing to take the lead on using their resources to carve out a number of digital niches.

News Corp (NYSE:NWS) Soars on Network Performance, Strong Ad Revenue

News Corp (NYSE:NWS) easily beat revenue results from last year in the same quarter, generating $8.76 billion, up from $6.84 billion the year before. Earnings came in at $29 cents a share, beating analysts' estimates of 28 cents a share. Last year earnings were 25 cents a share in the same quarter.

The strong performance of the networks of News Corp., along with its ad revenue (especially auto), led the company's quarterly results.

Guidance was in line with its prior estimate of double digit income growth for 2011.

Also good news for the company and shareholders is its shrinking reliance on ads as its key earnings metric. Recent concerns over rising commodity prices in the auto sector reveal the fragility of the ad market in that regard. Instead, other revenue sources, specifically retransmission fees from Fox broadcast channel and cable channels, are helping drive growth at the media company.

The cable assets of the network continue to lead the way, with ad revenue increasing 17 percent and affiliate fees growing by 11 percent. Cable networks generate about 60 percent of the operating income of News Corp.

News Corp. closed Wednesday at $17.51, gaining $0.42, or 2.46 percent.

Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) Secret iPad 2 Sighted at Launch of "The Daily"

Rumors are rampant that the first iPad 2 from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) was seen at the launch of News Corp.'s (NYSE:NWS) "The Daily," which will be seen, as of now, exclusively on the iPad.

Reuters' Jennifer Saba and Gabriel Madway exclaimed, "A Reuters eyewitness saw what appeared to be a working model of the next iPad with a front-facing camera at the top edge of the glass screen.

"A source with knowledge of the device confirmed its existence, adding that the final release model could have other features."

Some manufacturing sources have revealed the new iPad will come with two cameras. One will be on the front of the device and the other on the back, reportedly so video calls can be made by users.

After getting overtaken by Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) in the smartphone market, this is more than likely an "accidental" exposure of the iPad 2, using the press conference as a marketing tool for the device.

Google is feverishly working on improving their tablet offering to compete with Apple; something that obviously concerns them, especially after Google recently upgraded and improved their Android offering in the space.

This is all to keep consumers reminded of the coming release of iPad 2 so they don't get tired of waiting and acquire another device.

Apple closed Wednesday at $344.32, dropping $0.71, or 0.21 percent. Google closed at $612, gaining $0.96, or 0.16 percent. News Corp. closed at $17.51, up $0.42, or 2.46 percent.
