JPMorgan (JPM) Down on (NAV) (PFG) (VLY)

Even though JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) downgraded the consumer discretionary sector from "Overweight" to "Neutral," that didn't stop stocks like Ford (NYSE:F) from jumping, as they surpassed General Motors (NYSE:GM) in sales for the month of March. Gambling businesses like Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS) also went against the grain, as they have been rising on news gambling revenue in Macau soared.

The reasoning JPMorgan had behind the downgrading of the consumer discretionary sector, which they view as a short-term event, was that it has been overall "structurally weaker" for some time. They also see economic momentum starting to slow down while the sector continues to have high valuations.

As for other sectors, they pointed out some of their favorites and least favorite stocks, with their worst ones including Valley National (NYSE:VLY), Navistar (NYSE:NAV) and Principal Financial Group (NYSE:PFG).

Stocks that found favor with JPMorgan, among a number of them, include Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN), Gilead (NASDAQ:GILD), Aetna (NYSE:AET), Cigna (NYSE:CI), Delta Airlines (NYSE:DAL), UAL (NYSE:UAL), Medco Health Solutions (NYSE:MHS) and Life Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:LIFE).

JPMorgan (JPM) Recommends Newmont (NEM), (FCX), (MUSA), (STLD), Others

JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM), says Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM), Metals USA Holdings Corp. (NYSE:MUSA), Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX) and Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ:STLD) are solid picks if an investor believes oil prices will remain high.

Also noted were Thompson Creek Metals Co. (NYSE:TC), DHT Holdings Inc. (NYSE:DHT), Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN), Jabil Circuit Inc. (NYSE:JBL) and Gilead Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) as having a lot of potential in a high oil price environment.

Thomas Lee, chief U.S. equity strategist at JPMorgan said there’s “downside risk” to the 2011 S&P 500 earnings-per-share estimate of $97.50, though not to the 1,425 year-end forecast.

Lee said every $20-a-barrel rise in the price of oil has an impact of $2.22 in earnings per share for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

Stocks JPMorgan sees as those to avoid in this economic environment are Affymetrix Inc. (NASDAQ:AFFX), Standard Pacific Corp. (NYSE:SPF), MDC Holdings Inc. (NYSE:MDC) and Beazer Homes USA Inc. (NYSE:BZH).

Gilead (Nasdaq:GILD) Ends 2010 with a Revenue Drop

With the hyped-up concern over swine flu not materializing last year, Gilead (Nasdaq:GILD) finished the last quarter of the year with negative revenue, the first time since 1999.

A big part of income for Gilead is royalties they receive from Roche from their part in developing Tamiflu. In a down year it significantly reflects on revenue, and ultimately, earnings.

Royalty income is especially important because it goes direct to earnings because of the lack of cost inputs in royalties.

Product sales for the quarter were up 7 percent over the same period last year, led by HIV treatment Atripla.

Also pushing earnings down was increased spend in the R&D budget. That's not a bad thing as long as a strong pipeline is established.

Gilead was trading at $39.08, down $0.58, or 1.48 percent, as of 12:37 PM EST.

Gilead said they'll get the information in the hands of the FDA sometime in the first quarter of 2011.

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) Undervalued on HCV Pipeline Says Needham

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) is considered to be undervalued according to Needham & Company, which says their growing presence in the HCV space and strong balance sheet isn't appreciated.

Needham says, "Concerns around long-term growth have been an issue for the stock. We believe pipeline progression with both HIV and HCV programs in 2011 may restore investor enthusiasm. Gilead is now more relevant in the HCV space and given its balance sheet, deep clinical HCV pipeline, and expertise with combination antiviral therapy, has the potential to surpass competitors in the space. The stock is undervalued in our view and we reiterate our rating."

Needham & Company reiterates a "Buy" on Gilead Sciences, which was trading at $37.66, gaining $0.13, or 0.35 percent, as of 12:02 PM EST. Needham has a price target of $48 on Gilead.

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) Terminates ARTEMIS-IPF Phase III Study

Citing lack of efficacy, Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) announced they have terminated their ARTEMIS-IPF Phase III study.

Wedbush said, "Last night, Gilead announced termination of the ARTEMIS-IPF Phase III study due to lack of efficacy...We believe the termination of ambrisentan in IPF will be only slightly negative on GILD stock, as the Street has not modeled any sales from this indication. And this termination is positive for ITMN, whose Esbriet received a Positive Opinion from the CHMP last week andis poised to be approved for mild-to-moderate IPF in the EU during Q1:11...An acquisition of Intermune (Nasdaq: ITMN) may be a strategic fit for GILD, especially given the failure of ambrisentan in IPF."

Wedbush maintains an "Underperform" rating on Gilead Sciences, which was trading at $36.01, down $0.33, or 0.91 percents, as of 12:28 PM EST. Wedbush has a price target on them of $40.
