GE (GE), Hitachi (6501.T) Win Nuclear Reactor Design Approval in U.S.

The joint venture between General Electric Co (NYSE:GE) and Japan's Hitachi Ltd (6501.T), called GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, has won design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Later in the year that will lead the way to final certification for the next-generation reactor.

What this means is all technical issues have been taken care of, and countries recognizing U.S. standards can now be offered the reactors.

Detroit Edison, a subsidiary of DTE Energy Co (NYSE:DTE), has already applied for a license in the U.S. to use the reactor. It would be developed about 35 miles south of Detroit.

GE and Hitachi have joint ventures in the United States and Japan, created to meet the growing global demand for nuclear power.

Hitachi owns 80 percent of the Japan venture and GE 60 percent of the U.S. venture.

Weak economies have held back nuclear for the last several years, but that's expected to change over the next three to five years.

ITC Holding (NYSE:ITC), National Grid (NYSE:NGG) DTE (NYSE:DTE), NV Energy (NYSE:NVE), NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE), AES (NYSE:AES) Favorites of Barclays

Barclays (NYSE:BCS) said in a note they aren't as bullish on the regulated energy sector as they had been in 2010, and picked companies like ITC Holding (NYSE:ITC), National Grid (NYSE:NGG) DTE (NYSE:DTE) and NV Energy (NYSE:NVE), based on transmission exposure.

In the power sector, they like firms like NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) and AES Corp (NYSE:AES). because of not having to rely on a natural gas recovery to propel them.

Barclays said, "We enter 2011 with less conviction in our positive regulated utility/negative power view than last year. The palpable return of risk appetite among investors due to recent improvements in economic trends is responsible. While we are not reversing our stance, we are taking steps to narrow our focus. On the regulated side, we are highlighting securities that have higher growth potential due to transmission exposure (ITC Holding and National Grid or economic sensitivity due to geography and NV Energy. In Power, we like stocks that have opportunities that are tied to an economic acceleration, but are not dependant on natural gas price recovery and AES Corp.)

ITC Holding was trading at $62.33, gaining $0.35, or 0.56 percent, as of 1:47 PM EST. National Grid was trading at $44.44 0.06, up 0.14 percent. DTE Energy was trading at $45.60, up $0.28, or 0.62 percent. NV Energy was at $14.07, up $0.02, or 0.14 percent. NextEra Energy was at $52.26, up $0.27, or 0.52 percent. AES was trading at $12.62, gaining $0.44, or 3.65 percent.

DTE Energy (NYSE:DTE) Return Should Reach 15 Percent Over 12 Months

DTE Energy (NYSE:DTE) has the potential to generate a 15 percent return over the next year at minimum, says Barclays (NYSE:BCS).

"Our positive investment thesis for DTE is based on confidence in the two core utilities located in the constructive Michigan jurisdiction, a solid, and growing, dividend yield of 4.9%, and re-based expectations for the unregulated subs that now shifts revision bias to the upside," Barclays said.

"We see DTE as an attractive risk-reward total return story: We see DTE's 12 month potential total return in our base case as 15%. Our assumptions are that DTE is able to continue to execute their regulatory strategy in the premium Michigan jurisdiction and the unregulated segments demonstrate moderate growth off of their lowered '11 base."

DTE was trading at $45.61, gaining $0.30, or 0.66 percent, at 2:10 PM EST. Barclays has a price target on them of $50, lowering it from $52. They upgraded them to an "Equalweight" rating.

DTE Energy (NYSE:DTE) Trading Continues to be Major Concern Says Barclays (NYSE:BCS)

Although DTE Energy (NYSE:DTE) had a decent quarter, Barclays (NYSE:BCS) sees trading to continue to be one of their major concerns.

"DTE reported solid Q3 EPS and tightened their guidance range for 2010: DTE reported Q3'10 EPS of $0.96, in-line with the consensus estimate, and tightened their 2010 guidance range to $3.50-$3.70 from $3.45-$3.80. Rate relief at MichCon, tight cost controls at both utilities, and meaningful improvements at the P&I segment helped results, while another challenging quarter at trading was the biggest concern," said Barclays.

"We are tweaking our '10-'12 estimates to $3.62/$3.72/$3.88 from $3.67/$3.74/$3.92 and adjusting our target to $52. We are embedding $56M in earnings at P&I, flat performance at midstream, and a return to historical contributions by trading of $45M and assuming that the utilities will be able to earn their authorized 11% ROEs."

DTE closed Monday at $45.67, dropping $1.09, or 2.33 percent. Barclays increased their price target from $50 to $52, while maintaining their "Equalweight" on them.
