Companies with exposure to major grains like Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), Bunge Ltd. (BG), Corn Products International (CPO), Monsanto (MON) and DuPont (DD) were under pressure last week as corn and wheat prices fell and soybeans were for the most part about level.

Expectations are prices should rebound in the weeks ahead because of supply concerns coming from the impact of the weather on planting, which is behind schedule in a large number of cases.

Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE:ADM), Bunge Ltd (NYSE:BG), Cargill Land Deal with Chinese Importers
With the backdrop of a huge and surprising deal by China to acquire soybeans from American farmers, valued at $6.7 billion, companies like Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE:ADM), Bunge Ltd (NYSE:BG) and Cargill signed deals with major Chinese importers, including COFCO and Sinograin.
The deal for soybeans by China was the largest it has ever entered in as a one-off deal.
Dealers responded saying they thought there would be a symbolic purchase of soybeans, but not a legitimate, major deal like the one entered into.
It is believed the Chinese made it over concerns soybean prices could rise significantly throughout 2011, so they locked in prices now.
The overall deal represents 11.5 million tons of soybeans to be delivered in 2011 incrementally. The overall total is enough to meet the import demand of the Chinese for up to three months.
Soybeans acquired by China will be for delivery in the 2011/12 (September-to-August) marketing year.
Prices for soybeans have reached a 30-month high in January on Chinese demand and production concerns in South America.

They noted, "We expect Bunge's valuation to move off of its current trough level in 2011 driven by: 1) the resumption of system volume growth, 2) favorable soybean price trends through 1H11, 3) potential U.S. Dollar depreciation, and 4) a growing investor awareness of Bunge's Brazilian sugar and ethanol opportunity."

BP (NYSE:BP) Makes Bid for Brazil's Cerradinho
Reports from a Brazilian newspaper say BP (NYSE:BP) has made a bid for Cerradinho sugar and ethanol group, based in Brazil.
BP has reportedly offered $466 million to gain a 50 percent stake in the company.
According to the O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, talks have been going on for several months, and the board of Cerradinho is expected to give an answer one way or the other soon.
Neither company would comment on what the identified as market rumors.
It does seem the bid by BP was made, and if it's rejected, there are several other suitors like Bunge (NYSE:BG) and Noble (NYSE:NBL), among others, who Cerradinho could seek as a minority shareholder, which admittedly is their goal at this time.
Cerradinho said, "The company is analyzing several options and almost got to a decision, but hasn't concluded anything yet. We'll likely
have a decision by December."
