Search engines are usually topped by some celebrity, but the fascination and concern over the BP (NYSE:BP) oil spill as the story unfolded had people bombarding Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO) search looking for the latest updates.
This of course reveals the fact that people now consume news in a much different way than in the past, and we'll never go back to the way it used to be, as various platforms are now the norm.
The top search and BP Internet viewing was in reference to the live feed of the oil gushing into the Gulf. Other interests were the path the oil may take as it meandered through the Gulf, and satellite images of the region.
The second place Yahoo search on the year was the World Cup, again revealing and confirming we're in a global marketplace, as it's nowhere near as popular in America as it is in most other places in the world.
Don't despair though, as other than Apple's iPhone, the rest of the top ten searches on Yahoo! were related to celebrities, with Miley Cyrus being the top person of interest, coming in at No. 3 on the year.
