RF Micro Devices (NASDAQ:RFMD) Crushed on Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Share Loss

Shares of RF Micro Devices (NASDAQ:RFMD) were getting hit hard today on increasing share loss at Nokia (NYSE:NOK).

Needham says, "A worse-than-seasonal (10%-15%) decline in the core business due to further share loss at Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is compounded by a $25MM Q/Q decline in the transceiver business. GM was guided flat to down 200bps due to lower utilization, lower 3G revenue and the ramp of PowerSmart. We are subsequently lowering our F4Q11 revenue and non-GAAP EPS to $220.0MM/$0.08 from $253MM/$0.15 and compared with the consensus of $259.3/$0.15.

"We will wait through the estimate-reset and until the ramp of PowerSmart lends increased visibility before turning more positive on shares."

Needham & Company maintains a 'Hold' rating on RF Micro Devices (RFMD), which was trading at $7.01, losing $0.65, or 8.55 percent, as of 2:45 PM EST.

RF Micro Devices (NASDAQ:RFMD) Faces Revenue Pressure from Nokia (NYSE:NOK)

While the short term looks profitable for RF Micro Devices (NASDAQ:RFMD), in 2012 they could face significant revenue pressure from Nokia (NYSE:NOK).

UBS says, "For F3Q, we expect RFMD to report strong results and outlook, driven by strength in the handset market, especially in China ahead of the Chinese new year. For F3Q, we now expect RFMD to report Rev/EPS (pf) of $295m/19c (cons $285m/18c). For F4Q, we are modelling Rev/EPS of $284m/17c, vs. cons of $258m/15c. While in near term RFMD is benefitting from strength in handset market, revenue headwinds from Nokia transition could limit upside in F2012.

"For F3Q, we raise our Rev/EPS (pf) to $295m/19c (cons $285m/18c), from $287m/18c. For F2011, we raise Rev/EPS to $1,138m/71c (cons $1,103m/68c) from $1,123m/69c & for F2012 to $1,172m/75c from $1,127m/69c."

Verizon (NYSE:VZ), QUALCOMM (Nasdaq:QCOM), RF Micro (Nasdaq:RFMD), Motorola (NYSE:MOT), Ericsson (Nasdaq:ERIC) Tops Gleacher's Smartphone Picks

Gleacher is wowed by their new Verizon's (NYSE:VZ) new 4G LTE data card, which they updated from the prior VZ EV-DO data card. They reiterated Verizon as their top choice in the smartphone sector, and also like QUALCOMM (Nasdaq:QCOM), RF Micro (Nasdaq:RFMD), Motorola (NYSE:MOT) and Ericsson (Nasdaq:ERIC).

Gleacher said, "We upgraded our VZ EV-DO data card to Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) 4G LTE data card last week and ran field tests in the San Francisco Bay area. Verdict: WOW! Although our study was not scientific, we stand by our call that VZ's LTE network at 700MHz is a game changer and the industry will need to respond.

"We see dramatically better data performance on the VZ network and look for a competitive response from other US players and a move to international. We look forward to LTE smartphones from VZ by mid-2011. This supports our positive smartphone call with top picks QUALCOMM, RF Micro, Motorola and Ericsson.

"VZ's LTE network marks the first large-scale 4G LTE launch, and we believe this is the beginning of an important new phase for the entire industry. We are truly encouraged by early results this soon following the launch (remember the headaches of 3G?). We view the success as a long-term positive for the entire industry, with implications for all of the major participants. We note that data-cards are just the beginning. We believe smart phones and tablets that can harness the increased bandwidth will begin to ramp by mid-2011."

Verizon closed Monday at $34.11, up $0.07, or 0.21 percent.
