Sirius (LSE:SXX) Potash Mine to Yield £Billions

Plans to build a giant mine in the area to unearth billions of pounds worth of potash could be submitted in as little as 18 months.

The news was revealed by the chief executive of Sirius Minerals (LSE:SXX) as he visited Scarborough to talk to the town’s business leaders about the project.

Chris Fraser was invited to speak at the Ambassadors Dinner, at Beiderbecke’s Hotel, and update guests on the proposals to build a potash mine on the Yorkshire Coast, creating 5,000 jobs.

The plans were unveiled last month when mineral rights between Scarborough and Whitby were sold by York Potash to Sirius Minerals in a move aimed at creating the UK’s first potash mine in 40 years.

Has Mosaic (MOS) Gone as Far as it Can Short-Term?

In mid August, BHP (NYSE:BHP) made an ill-fated run at Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT).

Since then the entire fertilizer industry has been on a tear. Though valuations for some of the bigger firms may have bulged, their market prices have remained unrepentant. Talk of mergers, upped revenue outlooks, and dire crop forecasts have encouraged speculators to keep to a full gallop.

Mosaic (NYSE:MOS), one of the larger producers of concentrated phosphate and potash, has enjoyed the bid-up, and basked in the “glow of association” as a possible takeover target since October. Last Friday the stock reached $89.10, a two year high.

Not that the company has just been carried along for the ride. Mosaic has had its shoulder to the wheel. It has been doing brisk business and posting great numbers.

Recent revenue and earnings growth for the company have been stunning. Last quarter (4Q10) chalked up revenue growth of 56% year over year. Gross margins have been widening nicely and net income growth was up a scorching 89% from November 2009.

Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT) Will be Driven by Crop Prices in 2011

Strong crop price should continue on through 2011, and as crop prices go so should fertilizer demand go, and that ends up working strongly for Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT) and other fertilizer companies.

Barclays says, "With a strong correlation between crop price movement and fertilizer equity performance, it is no secret that fertilizer stocks began trending higher in mid-2010 as crop price forecasts started to gradually increase. With crop fundamentals continuing to strengthen on increasing demand and critically low ending inventories, there is no sign of crop price weakness in the short term. In our opinion, until we see crop prices begin to stagnate or even retreat by way of weakening crop fundamentals (either through demand destruction or supply improvements), we expect fertilizer equities to continue to perform well in 2011."

Barclays maintains an 'Overweight' rating on Potash Corp. (POT), which closed Friday at $174.16, up $0.02, or 0.01 percent. Barclays raised their price target on Potash from $165 to $198. Full year 2011 EPS estimate was boosted from $8.15 to $9.03.

Potash (NYSE:POT) Poised for Strong volumes, Demand, Pricing

The agriculture sector continues to have a strong outlook, including fertilizer giant Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT), which is expected to have a strong year in 2011.

Gleacher noted, "while management is confident that global spot prices are likely to rise on strong demand, their guidance did not include higher potash prices, though they do see the potential for prices to move higher as the gap between US and offshore prices narrows. In our view, US prices of $515/st ($565/mt) are likely to stabilize at current levels throughout the spring season as the focus will be on international prices. We believe producers will soon be targeting a $25-$30/mt price increase in Brazil and Southeast Asia as they believe farmers are focusing more on the current strong crop prices rather than the price of potash. Our total gross profit assumption of $4.0bil is in-line with the top-end of the guidance of $3.5-$4.0bil."

They raised full year 2011 and 2012 EPS estimates from $9.00 and $9.55 to $9.70 and $10.25.

Even so, Gleacher continues to keep their "Neutral" rating in place on Potash for now.

Potash was trading at $174.81, gaining $0.67, or 0.38 percent, as of 2:59 PM EST.

Potash (NYSE:POT) PT Boosted to $240, Street High

The high-flying Potash (NYSE:POT) received a big price increase from an analyst at Boenning & Scattergood, who increased his price target on the fertilizer company from $190 to $240. That's a new Street high PT on the stock.

Reasoning behing the huge uptick was the "supply/demand relationship emerging. World-wide, declared POT this morning, demand this year will climb to 55 – 60 million tons from 52 million tons in 2010, YET CURRENT GLOBAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY IS ONLY 61 MILLION TONS. In simple terms, supply is growing tighter and tighter..."

Farmers have more capital to spend this year also, after a bumper harvest last year from high soybean and corn prices.

Boenning & Scattergood reiterate an "Outperform" rating on Potash, which closed Thursday at $174.14, gaining $5.52, or 3.27 percent.

Analysts' Upgrades, Downgrades

Barclays (NYSE:BCS) said their maintaining their "Overweight" rating on Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT), citing an expected increase in production of potash, along with price increased for phosphate and nitrogen.

"Earlier this week we re-instated our rating on Potash Corporation after being restricted on the company since August 17. We had the opportunity to revise our model so as to reflect the changes that have occurred in the fertilizer industry since we have been restricted and incorporate new company guidance...We have incorporated our new fertilizer price deck and recent company guidance into our model.
