Sirius (SIRI), Liberty Capital (LCAPA) Maintain Ratings from Wunderlich

Wunderlich Securities’ analyst Matthew Harrigan issued research reports today on Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) and Liberty Capital (NASDAQ:LCAPA), whereby he maintains his "Buy" rating on both companies.

Harrigan said about competition for Sirius:

"Pandora is forcing more attention on competition within the vehicle, with an emerging consensus that it is SIRI’s content, convenience, and $80K+ income demo that relegates Pandora to more of a complementary position rather than the hard economics of wireless broadband audio streaming.

"The point here is not that individual OEM initiatives such as Ford Synch are satellite radio killers but that flux in conversion ratio has to be anticipated — even if SAAR growth and the used market opportunity should offset much of the decline."

Concerning the impact of Sirius on Liberty Capital, which has a 40 percent stake in the copany, Harrison noted he doesn't see any major moves coming from Liberty Capital towards Sirius in the near term.

Rather than increasing its stake or making a full tender offer for Sirius, Harrison said he thinks Liberty will purchase back its own discounted shares. “We expect Liberty to instead continue to focus on acquiring discounted LCAPA shares,” Harrigan concluded.

Sirius was trading at $1.79, up $0.021 or 1.19 percent, as of 2:48 PM EST. Liberty Capital was trading at $73.20, up $0.75, or 1.04 percent.

Sirius (SIRI), Pandora About to get Mogged?

Competitors to Sirius (NASDAQ:SIRI seem to be emerging on almost a weekly basis, and this time around Pandora is in the bulls-eye of the latest streaming combatant: Mog.

"One reason for that," according to Satellite Radio Playground, "is BMW’s Mini USA may soon offer the Mog music streaming service. Mog is different from Pandora, which lets you create a radio station tailored to your likes. Mog is true on-demand music streaming from the cloud, currently for only $5 a month."

"'Mini drivers will be able to plug in a smartphone and the Mini’s digital display will then control the Mog service. The phone provides the Internet access to Mog, but all the controls are in the dash.'

"In addition to on-demand music, Mog also offers custom radio stations for music discovery. And there’s a $10/month version that lets you download and keep songs even while you’re offline."

Sirius was trading at $1.79, up $0.03, or 1.70 percent.

Pandora About to Clean Sirius' (SIRI) Clock in GM Deal?

With Pandora about to get its hands on approximately $100 million through an IPO, and fresh off a new deal with General Motors (NYSE:GM) to stream online radio into its vehicles, it looks like Pandora is positioned to take some serious market share away from Sirius (NASDAQ:SIRI).

The deal with General Motors will include a new system to be offered first in the Equinox and Volt to stream the content.

GM is naming the new system "Chevy MyLink," which will include a 7" color touch-screen display in the dashboard.

How it will work is users can use an existing Pandora account to stream content from Pandora media by syncing the device in the car to their smartphone.

Pandora has a registered user base of 80 million. GM said they MyLink system will be placed in all of its vehicles over the next 18 months.

Sirius XM (NASDAQ:SIRI) Gets PT Boost from Wunderlich

Sirius XM (NASDAQ:SIRI) got a price target increase from Wunderlich Securities analyst Matthew Harrigan today, bumping it up from $1.75 to $2.00 a share.

Assuming normalized auto sales in the U.S. are close to 15 million by 2015. If Sirius can hold off better against competitors like Pandora and others, which could take an estimated 40 percent of share from Sirius, they could become a $3 stock, according to Harrington.

Harrigan pointed out that Pandora at this time has 80 million users and 1.4 billion channels, which accounts for half of all Internet radio listening. Pandora just filed for a $100 million IPO on Friday.

Commenting on the fourth quarter, Harrigan said increased its subscriber base by 297,000 subscribers.

He estimates revenue to come in at $741 million, and operating income to be $131 million.

S‏irius reports before market open on Tuesday morning.

Sirius was trading at $1.83 , down $0.01, or 0.54 percent, as of 2:57 PM EST.

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) Leading Pandora IPO

Pandora Media, the Web-based radio company, has officially filed for an IPO after months of speculation, led by JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS).

Of many of the IPOs recently launched or announced, this one is among the least impressive in our view.

It's not that there isn't a demand for the service, but the company itself says they haven't been able to, and won't in the future be able to, overcome the cost of royalties. Pandora noted they have “not in the past generated and may not in the future generate sufficient revenue from the sale of advertising and subscriptions to offset such royalty expenses.”

As far as what they announced they'll do with money from an IPO, that didn't build confidence either. They said of the capital raised from the IPO, which they project as being up to $100 million, about $25 million will be used pay a dividend to investors.

They have no confidence in being able to generate a profit with their business model and they're looking at paying a dividend. That's not good business, however you look at it.

Dividends are to be paid out on legitimately positive outlooks, not simply to award shareholders at the possible expense of the company.

Pandora's business model is flawed, period. If they have a successful IPO, they should take that money and use it to generate revenue streams that are profitable, not to spend it on shareholders in the short term.

Pandora has been growing, now with over 80 million registered users. The problem is if you're losing money from royalties on the music played, the more users you get the more potential losses you incur.

Again, Pandora must change their business model, or at minimum mine other revenue from their 80 million plus users. That shouldn't be that hard, there are a plethora of products or services to could be developed or partnered with others to offer to a customer base of that size.

Groupon, Pandora Talking IPO's with Investment Bankers

A report by Kate Kelly of CNBC (NYSE:GE) said that Groupon and Pandora have been in meetings with investment banking representatives to talk about potential IPOs.

Early estimates are an IPO by Groupon would fetch about $1 billion, possibily a little more, and Pandora would generate about $100 million in an IPO.

Some of the recent moves by Groupon are somewhat puzzling, as after rejecting Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) $6 billion offer last month, they raised capital later from venture capitalists, making the idea of an IPO somewhat odd, as the usual reason for an IPO is because you can't raise funds elsewhere.

Either way, it looks like the two companies are seriously considering going public.
