Shares of (PCS) (BAC) (JPM) (AVP) (MA) (GM) Jump Today

Shares of MetroPCS Communications (NYSE:PCS), Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), J.P. Morgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Alcoa (NYSE:AA), Mastercard (NYSE:MA), Avon Products (NYSE:AVP) and General Motors (NYSE:GM) all pushing up today.

A report from MetroPCS Communications set the tone, as it reported that earnings in the first quarter had more than doubled over the same quarter last year. That helped push up shares of Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T), as new customer additions broke a quarterly record at the company.

Financials were also moving up today, with banking giants Bank of America, JPMorgan, Citigroup (NYSE:C) and Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) all trading positive.

Mastercard jumped on revenue and earnings surpassing expectations for the latest quarter. Profits were up 24 percent year-over-year.

General Motors (GM) got a bump from the 26 percent increase in vehicle sales in April, although that didn't help major competitors like Ford Motor (NYSE:F) or Toyota (NYSE:TM), which were trading down.

Continual but unlikely rumors that Rio Tinto (NYSE:RIO) is looking to acquire Alcoa (NYSE:AA) pushed the share price of the aluminum producer up, up over 3 percent at one point, although pulling back as the day has gone on.

Avon Product soared 5 percent, and has held throughout the day, as the company's earnings in the first quarter were more than triple over last year in the same quarter, while margins improved.

AT&T (T), (VZ), (PCS), (LEAP) All Get Upgrades on T-Mobile Deal

Shares of AT&T (NYSE:T), Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ), MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) and Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP) all soared today after the overall sector received a positive outlook from analyst William V. Power of R.W. Baird & Co.

This was based on Power's assumption the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA by AT&T will clear regulatory hurdles and be approved.

Power sees the wireless industry becoming more stable and competitive, while companies like Leap and MetroPCS benefiting from it.

Also noted was an approved deal could result in Verizon or Sprint (NYSE:S) attempting to acquire U.S. Cellular, MetroPCS or Leap Wireless.

The obvious benefit for AT&T would be lower costs and for Verizon the current number of competitors would be cut back, which would result in a more consistent pricing environment, according to Power.

Leap was trading at $15.70, up $0.68, or 4.53 percent, as of 12:57 PM EDT. MetroPCS was at $15.85, gaining $0.31, or 1.96 percent. Verizon was trading at $37.82, rising $0.53, or 1.42 percent. AT&T was at $29.36, up $0.51, or 1.79 percent.

Sprint (S) Value So Low Must Merge

After the offer by AT&T (NYSE:T) for T-Mobile, it appears that Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S) has been put in the postiion where it must make a merger deal with someone.

Sprint’s 11 percent plunge to $4.49 after the announcement of the T-Mobile USA deal has left its stock trading below the company’s $4.87 a share in assets minus liabilities. That means investors can now buy Sprint for 92 cents on the dollar, cheaper than 99 percent of companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index excluding financials, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Sprint’s licenses from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, which give it the right to operate its network in specific regions, alone are worth $19.9 billion, 46 percent more than its market capitalization of $13.6 billion, the data show.

AT&T’s purchase of T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) will give the combined company more than double the customers of Sprint, while Verizon Wireless has almost twice the market share. To boost value, Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint may buy the remaining stake in partner Clearwire Corp. (CLWR) or another carrier such as MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS), according to Dan Hays, a director at consultancy PRTM. It may also become a target for Verizon as carriers that run on the same network technology are forced to combine, he said.

“Someone, whether it’s Sprint or Verizon (NYSE:VZ), is going to have to serve as a catalyst for the consolidation,” said Washington- based Hays, who specializes in telecommunications. “What’s clear is that they can’t all afford to remain independent.”

Sprint closed Wednesday at $4.49, up $0.02, or 0.45 percent.

MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) Upside Looks Weak Says Auriga

MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) appears to have reached its upper level, according to Auriga, and they said they're going to the sidelines on the stock for now.

Auriga says, "PCS reported weaker than expected net additions for 4Q10 of 298K versus 393K consensus. However, churn was improved at 3.5% versus 3.8% in the previous quarter. We are choosing to move to the sidelines for three reasons. These weaker than expected net additions suggest increasing competition, especially from Leap Wireless (LEAP, Hold) which has recently begun to copy PCS's business model. Second, the stock has reached and slightly exceeded our $13 price target. Third, after raising EBITDA estimates multiple times over the past year, we do not believe there is material upside to our and consensus estimates for 2011 and 2012 (unless the sale of data phones exceeds our expectations)."

Auriga downgraded MetroPCS from "Buy" to "Hold." MetroPCS was trading at $12.94, down $0.36, or 2.74 percent, as of 1:36 PM EST. They have a price target on them of $13.

MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS), Leap Wireless (Nasdaq:LEAP) Down on Lower Subscription Signups

MetroPCS Communications (NYSE:PCS) and Leap Wireless (Nasdaq:LEAP) both gained new subscribers in the fourth quarter, but fell short of expectations, with MetroPCS adding 298,000 new customers and Leap 435,000 new customers.

MetroPCS got punished the most, as they fell below last year's total of 317,355 new subscribers for the same quarter.

Both companies are competing for two types of customers, those who want simple flat-rate service plans like that offered by MetroPCS, and for those who want more sophistication in their phones and are willing to pay for it; things like downloading data and smartphones.

Leap Wireless International closed Thursday at $13.96, falling $0.37, or 2.58 percent. MetroPCS closed at $13.30, dropping $0.96, or 6.73 percent.

Sprint (NYSE:S), MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS), Leap Wireless's (Nasdaq:LEAP) Prepaid Demand Remains Strong

Citing channel checks in the fourth quarter, Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB) said they see that having a positive impact on companies strongly exposed to the sector, including Sprint (NYSE:S), MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) and Leap Wireless (Nasdaq:LEAP), among others.

Deutsche said, "We have 2 positive takeaways from our 4Q channel checks for MetroPCS, which covered over 80 stores across the company's 14 major markets. (1) Demand remains strong for PCS' prepaid services and we are increasing our 4Q net add estimate to 425k (consensus 393k) from 350k. (2) Rate plan mix continues to improve, which implies that our 2011 ARPU and EBITDA estimates may be conservative.

"We also contacted nearly 60 channels selling other prepaid brands such as Boost and Virgin (Sprint (NYSE:S)), Straight Talk (TracFone), and Cricket (Leap Wireless (Nasdaq:LEAP)). Our key takeaway is that Sprint saw strong prepaid demand during 4Q, especially for Boost, which suggests potential upside to our prepaid net add est of 650k."

Deutsche Bank maintains a "Buy/Top Pick" on MetroPCS, which closed Tuesday at $13.92, gaining $0.85, or 6.50 percent. They raised their price target on them from $15 to $20.

Sprint closed at $4.45, losing $0.06, or 1.33 percent. Leap Wireless closed Tuesday at $13.50, up $0.09, or 0.67 percent.

Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) Likes Leap Wireless (Nasdaq:LEAP), MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) on Low Churn Rates

Wells Fargo said they see Leap Wireless (Nasdaq:LEAP) and MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) benefiting strongly from the lower churn rates, and have upside potential in the fourth quarter.

Wells said, "Expect both PCs and Leap to show significant
momentum from Q3 levels - Based on these channel checks--we believe both Leap Wireless and MetroPCS have benefited from lower churn trends as a result of their new all inclusive tax/fee plans as well as the better selection of handsets. While gross adds have remained solid, we believe the bigger benefit has been seen in churn trends. As a result of these findings, we believe there is upside potential to Street estimates for Q4 net adds for both companies."

"We believe both PCS and LEAP are well positioned to realize positive trends in Q4 and early 2011. There seems to be a macro shift now occuring which should benefit both operators. As the addressable market for prepay continues to expand, both companies should be able to realize from additional subscriber growth--without having to spend the heavy capital burden of lighting up new markets. In terms of a longer term idea, we continue to prefer PCS over LEAP as PCS should continue to see better sub growth, higher margins and free cash flow generation, in our view."

Leap Wireless was trading at $13.16, gaining $0.90, or 7.34 percent, as of 12:47 PM EST. PCS was trading at $12.91, gaining $0.28, or 2.22 percent.
