Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle Offered Free for Some

It was only recently that the idea of Amazon's (NASDAQ:AMZN) highly popular Kindle will be offered free, and that has become a reality for some, as it is being bundled by Carphone Warehouse - the mobile phone retailer in Europe - which will offer Wi-Fi Kindles for free upon the purchase of a two-year contract on select mobile phones.

There can be no doubt that this will eventually expand, especially as if sales for the contract soar because of the Kindle factor.

Along with Amazon's effort to compete with Netflix by offering free streaming content with every Prime membership, this free Kindle push could be a means to maintain an e-reader lead against Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad, Barnes and Noble's (NYSE:BKS) Nook, and the Sony Reader (NYSE:SNE). Still, there's little worry about Kindle abandonment in light of iPad's success. In fact, there's actually an increase in Kindle ownership. Lunden writes:

"In a poll of those buying the iPad 2 over the first weekend of sales found that 24 percent owned a Kindle, compared to 13 percent of original iPad buyers having a Kindle. And only 6 percent use their iPad 2 as an e-reading device, down from 19 percent of those surveyed during the launch of the first iPad," said Paid Content's Ingrid Lunden.

Amazon was trading at $164.01, down $1.07, or 0.65 percent, as of 2:27 PM EDT.

Amazon.com's (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Sales Could Exceed Expectations

Kindles sold by Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) in 2010 come in at an estimated 7.1 million, according to Barclays (NYSE:BCS), who also sees another 12.3 million being sold in 2011, which could be a conservative estimate.

Barclays says, "We now estimate that Amazon sold 7.1 million Kindles in 2010 and will sell 12.3 million in 2011, though our numbers may still be conservative. We also believe increased Kindle device sales coupled with the second wave of tablet PCs will help to further drive Kindle eBook content sales in 2011. Our estimates now suggest total Kindle related sales (devices and content) will reach $3.3 billion in 2011-7.7% of Amazon's revenue-and more than $7.0 billion in 2013-11.1% of Amazon's total revenue...Our $195 price target is based on 25x our 2011E FCF/share of $7.80."

Barclays maintains an "Overweight' rating on Amazon.com, which closed Tuesday at $191.25, gaining $250, or 1.32 percent. Barclays has a price target of $195 on Amazon.com.

Amazon (Nasdaq:AMZN) Releasing Kindle App for Windows (Nasdaq:MSFT), Android (Nasdaq:GOOG)

The successful results of Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN) releasing Kindle on Apple's (Nasdaq:AAPL) iPad has encouraged them to follow up on that with a version of the Kindle app being released on Microsoft's (Nasdaq:MSFT) tablet and Google's (Nasdaq:GOOG) Android.

Some have expressed surprise at the inclusion of a Windows app from Amazon, as they haven't proven themselves in the space yet.

Conjecture is Amazon may have been afforded a look at the OS Microsoft will be revealing at CES, and they liked what they saw.

The move to develop a Kindle app for Android is a more obvious one, with the large number expected to be released in 2011.

Getting no respect at this time is Research in Motion's (Nasdaq:RIMM) Playbook. If it does gain some traction, it's probable that it will get an app from Amazon as well.

Amazon was trading at $184.63, gaining $0.41, or 0.22 percent, as of 1:56 PM EST. Google was trading at $ 602.80, down $1.55, or 0.26 percent. Microsoft was at $28.04, up $0.06, or 0.21 percent. Research in Motion was trading at $58.61, down $0.33, or 0.56 percent.

Amazon.com's (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Top-Selling Product Ever on Site

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) said that their latest Kindle e-reader, the third-generation Kindle offering of the company, has become the largest-selling product on their site in the history of the company.

The reason for sales exceeding expectations, appears to be consumers using it as their primary digital reading device, and not substituting other gadgets as a reader.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com CEO said, "We're seeing that many of the people who are buying Kindles also own an LCD tablet. Customers report using their LCD tablets for games, movies, and web browsing and their Kindles for reading sessions."

Concerning overall sales in the Christmas shopping season, Amazon said on November 29, their best day, over 13.7 million items were ordered on the site worldwide, a record performance for the company.

Amazon.com's (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Sales Blowing Past Expectations

Kindle sales from Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) are exploding past analysts' estimates, as about 5 million units were expected to be sold, and they're on track to sale about 8 million units in 2010, a 60 percent increase over projections.

This is a huge increase over the 2.4 million units sold in 2009.

Amazon sells three versions of Kindle, with the highest being the DX version, selling for 379, and second on the works over 3G wireless networks and Wi-Fi, and last the least expensive version, which downloads only on Wi-Fi and sells for $139.

The online retailer made a huge push in marketing the Kindle this year, and it has obviously paid out great for them.

Amazon closed Tuesday at $184.75, up $1.46, or 0.80 percent.

Amazon (Nasdaq:AMZN) Soars on Citigroup (NYSE:C) Price Target, "Buy" Rating

Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN) is soaring today in anticipation of a big Christmas season and the reiteration by Citigroup (NYSE:C) analyst Mark Mahaney of a "Buy" rating on the online retailer.

One of the major catalysts was the “Hot 20 toys” survey which included Amazon and major competitors Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) and Target (NYSE:TGT). Findings were when shipping was included for the hottest toys, Amazon was the pricing leader, and also the only one offering every one of the toys on the list.

In another survey, 12 percent of respondents said they were going to acquire a e-reader device of some type this Christmas, suggesting the estimate made by Mahaney that 8 million kindles would be sold this holiday season may be to conservative.

Amason was trading at $176.71, gaining $8.51, or 5.06 percent at 12:04 PM EST. Citigroup has a price target of $190 on them.
