Finisar (FNSR), Ciena (CIEN), JDS Uniphase (JDSU), Oclaro (OCLR) Crunched Wednesday on Low Guidance
With the optical sector being extremely volatile, when one company announces something important, the rest usually will rise or fall on that news, as Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN), JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU) and Oclaro (NASDAQ:OCLR) did when Finisar (NASDAQ:FNSR) lowered their guidance recently.
Optical-networking companies got hit hard Wednesday, with Finisar Corp. (FNSR) leading the disaster. Finisar’s shares closed with a loss of $15.43,or 38.5%, at $24.61 in the heels of the company’s weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter forecast.
Finisar said it expects to earn 31 cents to 35 cents a share on revenue of $235 million to $250 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had forecast a profit of 48 cents a share on $268.6 million in sales for that quarter.
Oclaro closed Wednesday at $13.53, losing $3.09, or 18.59 percent. Ciena closed at $24.33, down $1.35, or 5.27 percent. JDS Uniphase closed at $21.14, plunging $4.24, or 16.71 percent. Finisar ended the session at $24.61, down $15.43, or 38.54 percent.

Shares of JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq:JDSU), Oclaro, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCLR), Oplink Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:OPLK), CIENA Corp. (Nasdaq:CIEN) and Infinera Corp. (Nasdaq:INFN) are getting crushed today on the weak earnings guidance of Finisar Corp. (Nasdaq:FNSR).
While the third quarter results of Finisar were in line with expectations, its fourth quarter earnings guidance of $0.31-$0.35 was so far below analyst estimates of $0.48 a share that it spoke of probably sector problems.

Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN) Reaches Another High Today
Now that Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN) has reached another high today, it could be time for investors to re-access their strategy with the company, as it's been moving up fast; too fast.
On Friday the provider of equipment which helps Internet congestion relief, jumped 15 percent, and today again moved to a 52-week high, although it has pulled back some in mid-day trading.
In the last couple of months the share price has doubled, also making it better to tighten things up as the stock could be ready for a healthy correction.
The recent surge in share price for Ciena came in response to JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq:JDSU) big quarter. That's important because JDSU provides companies like Ciena the components used to battle Web congestion. If they're seeing strong growth in demand, the assumption is that's because companies like Ciena are also seeing strong growth in demand.
With growing pressure on the Internet, Ciena should be a good long-term play, but with its recent run-up in share price, it may be time to take a breather and wait for dips.
Ciena was trading at $26.92, up $0.02, or 0.07 percent, as of 1:05 PM EST.

CIENA (NASDAQ:CIEN) Confident 2011 Guidance Milestone for 2012
While they believe there is more upside for CIENA (NASDAQ:CIEN) in 2011 and 2012, Barclays see the share price of the company starting to reflect the upside.
Barclays says, "We believe EPS leverage remains, but the shares are starting to reflect the upside: We believe Ciena is increasingly confident its 2011 guidance will prove only milestones ahead of higher targets in 2012. We retain our high-end estimates and boost our multiple on improving visibility - though are cognizant much upside may be priced in...Rising visibility allows our multiple to rise to 23x FY12E EPS of $1.20. Our upside EPS of $1.60 (18% sales growth, 12% operating margins) implies an 18x multiple in our $28 price target...We expect Ciena's share price appreciation to slow following a strong run and string of catalysts."
Barclays reiterates an "Overweight" rating on CIENA (CIEN), which closed Tuesday at $25.49, up $0.16, or 0.63 percent. Barclays boosted their price target on CIENA from $22 to $28.

As far as some of the substance, one of those creating a lot of buzz was the announcement that Nvidia Corp. would be partnering with ARM Holdings to develop central processors for PCs, a direct challenge to Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC). While it's not a short-term play, it did generate a lot of talk.

CIENA (NASDAQ:CIEN) Nortel MEN Revenue Uncertainty Concerns Analysts
The inability to get a firm grip on the actual run rate of revenues for the Nortel MEN group makes the stock a hard one to call, according to Auriga, which lowered earnings estimates on the company, while maintaining a "Hold" rating on them.
Auriga said, "Despite the near-term hurdles with respect to the macro environment and the pending launch of the 5400 platform, we recognize that successful integration of the Nortel assets is far more important to the stock. Given that our proprietary checks continue to suggest solid execution on this front, we are tempted to get more constructive on the name. However, we worry that a top-line reset may create significant pressure on the stock. Lack of visibility on the "true" run rate of revenues for the Nortel MEN group makes CIEN a challenging stock call."
Auriga also said they see the company reporting lower than estimated earnings in their next quarterly report.
Ciena closed Wednesday at $15.48, gaining $0.26, or 1.71 percent. Auriga has a price target of $14 on them.
