Biogen (BIIB) BG-12 Results Surprise, Shares Soar

Shares of Biogen Idec Inc are soaring today on the surprising results from a clinical trial of its experimental multiple sclerosis drug BG-12.

According to Biogen, results showed the drug, when given twice a day, cut the annualized relapse rate by 53 percent at two years compared with placebo, and lowered the rate of disability progression by 38 percent.

BG-12 is a pill that would compete with Gilenya, a drug launched recently from Novartis AG (NOVN); and laquinimod, an experimental pill being developed by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (NASDAQ:TEVA).

Biogen already sales drugs for multiple sclerosis called Avonex, which is injected, and Tysabri, which is infused.

Doug Williams, Biogen's head of research and development, said, "Based on the data we've seen so far, if we can replicate it in the next trial, I feel very comfortable that we will have a very competitive drug in the MS space."

Biogen also reported earnings, which excluding one-time items, came to $1.43 a share in the first quarter. Analysts were on average expecting earnings of $1.41 a share and revenue of $1.18 billion.

Biogen was trading at $104.01, up $17.44, or 20.15 percent, as of 12:47 PM EDT.

Biotech Doesn't Get Human Genome (HGSI) Bump

Negative economic news is weighing on the markets today, and even with the nice performance of Human Genome Sciences (NASDAQ:HGSI), it wasn't enough to push the sector up with them.

Human Genome Sciences was jumping over 12 percent after the FDA approved the company's Benlysta drug for the treatment of lupus. The drug is the first designed specifically to treat lupus, an incurable condition, afflicting 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide, Bloomberg News reported. GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK) is partnering with Human Genome Sciences on Benlysta. One analyst cited by Bloomberg said Benlysta sales could reach $2.3 billion in the U.S. and $3.6 billion globally in 2015.

The companies expect to have Benlysta available to doctors within two weeks, according to Human Genome.

Biomarin Pharmaceutical (NASDAQ:BMRN) is down 2% today. Biogen Idec (NASDAQ:BIIB) is lower by 1%. Both had unsuccessfully attempted to bring lupus treatments to the market in the past.

In other parts of the biotech sector, Transition Therapeutics (NASDAQ:TTHI) is plummeting 16% on high volume. Spectrum Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:SPPI) and Exelixis (NASDAQ:EXEL) are also trading at higher-than-normal volumes.

Human Genome was trading at $28.91, gaining $3.23, or 12.58 percent, as of 1:42 PM EST.

Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB) Competitive Risks Growing in 2011

Barclays (NYSE:BCS) sees the competitive risks growing for Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB) in 2011, and the thing to watch will be whether or not IMPACT RX trends will be sustainable.

Barclays said, "We are maintaining our Equal Weight rating on BIIB following review on IMPACT RX data for competitor Gilenya and in consideration of increasing competitive risk in 2011. With strong launch of Gilenya masked by aggressive Novartis (NYSE:NVS) sampling we see potentially greater downside risk to Avonex and Tysabri trends for BIIB than suggested by IMS prescription data. Sustainability of IMPACT RX trends will be key to watch in 2011."

Barclays maintains an "Equalweight" on Biogen, which closed Friday at $68.14, up $0.22, or 0.32 percent. They have a price target of $53 on them.

Elan (NYSE:ELN) Pressured by Gilenya Launch

Elan Corp (NYSE:ELN) will be under pressure as a result of the impressive launch of Novartis' (NYSE:NVS) oral MS drug Gilenya.

Barclays noted, "We are maintaining our rating on Elan following review of SDI VONA prescription data, with focus on a strong U.S. launch of Novartis' (NYSE:NVS) oral MS drug Gilenya and its negative impact on Elan (NYSE:ELN) / Biogen's (Nasdaq:BIIB) Tysabri. The proprietary physician-level data from ImpactRx demonstrate that Gilenya, which was launched in October, has captured 23% of New Written Prescription Starts (NWRx) in November among neurologists. For Tysabri, we estimate that its NWRx share has fallen to 7% in November from 13% for YTD September period."

Barclays maintains an "Equalweight" on Elan Corp., which closed Friday at $6.00, up $0.15, or 2.56 percent. Barclays has a price target of $6 on them.
